The Sacred Rituals

The groom's sacred bath
The dawn ritual for Ashok. Bathed and dressed in a simple dhoti, he is given a sacred thread, a staff, an umbrella and a fan — the outfit of a student-scholar.
Why it matters
Snathakam marks the completion of brahmacharya, the student stage of life. A man must graduate from it before entering grihastha, the householder stage — quite literally the groom's convocation.

Kasi Prayanam
The journey that never happens
Still dressed as a scholar, Ashok announces he is renouncing the world for Kasi — and is intercepted by the bride's father, who talks him into marriage instead. The most theatrical ritual of the three days.
Why it matters
This is where the groom is offered his daughter's hand and accepts it. Behind the comedy sits a real declaration — a life of learning alone, set aside for one built with a partner.

Haldi
Mangala Snanam
Turmeric, sandalwood and oil — applied by the married women of the family, then by everyone else. Expect to be smeared. Bring a change of clothes.
Why it matters
The auspicious bath that purifies and blesses the couple. Turmeric cools and heals — but it is also Lakshmi's colour, believed to ward off the evil eye and bring a glow on the day it matters most.

The swing ceremony
The couple is seated on a decorated swing by the water while the women sing, perform aarti and offer sweets, milk and fruit. Snacks run throughout — drift in whenever you can.
Why it matters
A celebratory blessing on the eve of the wedding, carried entirely by the women of both families and their songs. The gentlest hour of the three days.

The wedding
The wedding itself, in the hours before dawn. Jeelakarra–bellam, the mangalsutra tied in three knots, talambralu by the handful, and the saptapadi — seven steps around the sacred fire. The hall opens early; come early, stay through.
Why it matters
Everything before this was preparation. At the astrologically chosen moment Gouthami and Ashok become husband and wife — the mangalsutra binds them, the seven steps are seven vows. Your talambralu are the blessing that completes it.

Just so you know
The property
Sunray is looking after us beautifully for three days. Any damage to resort property will be settled directly by the guest concerned — a small ask, gently made.
Check-in & check-out
Do confirm your check-in and check-out times at the reception. Rooms have been booked around each family's travel plans, so the times differ from guest to guest — and every early check-in and late check-out that was communicated to us is already taken care of. Only a change beyond what was shared would need to be settled with the resort directly.
Food & room service
Every wedding meal is taken care of. Anything ordered outside the scheduled meals — room service, the restaurants, extras — is billed by the resort directly to the guest.
Swimwear
Do carry your swimwear. The resort has a strict swimwear policy and proper swim attire is required to use any of the pools — regular clothes will not be allowed in.
Good to Know
Banthi vs Buffet
A banthi is the traditional seated meal — guests sit in rows and are served course by course on the leaf. A buffet is served at counters, at your own pace. Lunch on the 29th and 30th and the wedding-morning breakfast are banthi; everything else is buffet.
If it rains
The Fish Pond and the Jungle are open-air venues. Should the weather turn, those ceremonies move indoors to Rose Hall. Timings stay the same — only the room changes.
Timings
The times listed are for the ceremonies themselves. Venues are often decorated and occupied a day ahead, so do wander in early — the setting up is half the fun. Muhurtham guests, note the 3:00 AM start.
And most of all
Enjoy the wedding. Talk to strangers, sit at a table where you know nobody, make a friend or two.
Dance crazy. Ask for the mike and sing. Throw a water balloon, and get thoroughly drenched.
